MY DESIGN PROCESS
Designing a garden can feel daunting, but my clear step-by-step process makes it simple and enjoyable. From our first conversation to the final planting plans, you’ll know exactly what to expect at every stage.
PHASE 1

Initial Visit
The process begins with a site visit. Walking around your garden together helps me to understand how you use the space, what you’re drawn to, and what you’d like to change. We’ll then sit down to shape the brief and talk through your priorities and budget. Afterwards I’ll send you a fee proposal: this will be split into clear stages, priced separately so that you can select as many or as few as you wish.
PHASE 2

Survey & Analysis
We’ll arrange a topographical survey to map the garden, capturing levels, boundaries, trees, utilities and anything else that will influence the design. I’ll also take photographs and note environmental factors such as soil type, aspect and microclimates. I’ll then produce a Site Analysis document bringing together the survey data, your brief and my initial observations. Please see Q&As for more information.
PHASE 3

Concept design
This is the exciting stage where ideas start to take shape. I’ll prepare a presentation that sets out the overall layout and structure of the garden, illustrating how the main elements relate to one another. The focus is on spatial arrangement, flow and atmosphere, rather than detailed materials or planting, helping you understand the overall look and feel of the proposed design. At this stage, some clients choose to use the Concept Design as a source of inspiration and bring the process to a close, while others decide to progress to the more detailed design stages that follow.
PHASE 4

Master plan and technical design
Once the concept is agreed, I’ll develop the design in more detail. I’ll then produce detailed drawings and specifications for every part of the build, covering layout, drainage, hard landscaping and lighting where needed. This facilitates accurate costing and a successful build.
PHASE 5

TENDERING
If you already have a preferred landscaper, the technical drawings can be handed over to guide the build. If not, I’ll prepare a tender pack and send it to three trusted local contractors. I’ll review the quotes to help you choose the best fit. Because the documents are detailed and consistent, the quotes will be directly comparable.
PHASE 6

PLANTING PLANS
Using your feedback and soft landscaping mood boards, I’ll create detailed planting plans and a plant schedule listing names, quantities, sizes and planting positions. Planting will be tailored to your preferences and site conditions, including soil type and aspect. I can also provide a maintenance schedule if required.
PHASE 7

Project Monitoring
Once construction begins, I offer regular site visits at agreed intervals, plus ad-hoc support if needed.
